With Brandon Petersen suspended, will Itumeleng Khune be finally brought back into the squad and possibly get an honorary appearance?

Kaizer Chiefs could be faced with having to hand an honorary appearance to Itumeleng Khune in one of the three remaining league games.

This could be necessary if the club sticks to its plan not to hand Khune another playing contract when his current deal expires at the end of June.

Chiefs announced upon handing Khune a one-year extension in 2023 that it would be his last playing deal at the club.

The veteran keeper has not been back in the match day squad since his return from a club-imposed suspension on March 6 that came after he transgressed on club protocols late last year.

The sanctions imposed on him meant he lost both his place in the team and armband following an alcohol related incident that happened in November.

As he moves within weeks of his 37th birthday, Khune is facing nervous moments after indicating his desire to play on.

AmaKhosi now have Bruce Bvuma as first choice with Brandon Petersen deputising while Karabo Molefe is pushing to get his first team break.

Petersen was red carded from the bench in midweek and finds himself amongst three players suspended for the trip to AmaZulu along with Given Msimango and Edmilson Dove who was also sent off on Tuesday.

Minus Petersen, this might be an opportunity to bring Khune back into the match day squad after 16 games out.

Chiefs only have the top eight left to play for this season.

Khune has played only a quarter of Chiefs’ games in the period since January 2020 and has not known a clean in all his last 10 appearances.

His last clean sheet was on December 31, 2022.

Beyond the possibility of honorary minutes, it remains to be seen if Khune will get a testimonial match depending on what happens in the next couple of weeks.
