United manager Erik ten Hag welcomed Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford and Luke Shaw back in the starting line-up, as Marcel Sabitzer, Jadon Sancho and Harry Maguire dropped out.

United carved out their first chance on 14 minutes when Christian Eriksen played in Fernandes, who took one touch on the edge of the box before seeing his strike turned away by Robert Sanchez.

The game was played at a lively tempo but chances seemingly dried up as both sides looked quite sloppy in the final third.

However, the Red Devils had three big chances in the latter stages of the first half, with Martial and Fernandes failing to hit the target while Eriksen was denied by Sanchez.

The lively tempo continued in the second half and Brighton went close to opening  the scoring but De Gea produced another good save to keep out Julio Enciso's snapshot.

That proved to be the final chance of the 90 minutes, as the sides headed to another 30 minutes of extra-time, which saw Ten Hag introduce Sabitzer for Antony in the midfield.

Rashford nearly got he breakthrough on 104 minutes with a deflected strike from the edge of the box, but Sanchez showed great reflexes to keep out the strike.

Neither side got find the goal in latter stages of extra-time, sending the game to penalties where United won 7-6, with Victor Lindleof scoring the winning kick after March had missed.
