According to a Reuters report, the Benfica and Albiceleste winger has been warned not to return to Rosario after he recently said he would like to end his career at his boyhood club Rosario Central.

It is said that a sign was left in front of the private neighbourhood Di Maria usually stays in, addressed to the 2022 World Cup champion.

"Tell your son Angel not to come back to Rosario because we will kill a family member," it read.

"Not even (Maximiliano) Pullaro (provincial governor) is going to save you. We don't leave paper notes. We leave bullets and dead people behind."

The threats come amid a wave of gang- and drug-related violence in the city, with Lionel Messi's family having also been targeted in recent months.

Media in Argentina say the motivation for the threats remain unknown, with police investigating the matter.
