Earlier this week, the 2022 FIFA World Cup winner confirmed that he had chosen to join the side co-owned by ex-Manchester United and Real Madrid superstar David Beckham.
Messi, who turns 36 later this month, explained in a lengthy interview that he had not received a formal offer from Barcelona, claiming more work needed to be done by the Spanish giants in order for one to materialise.
It was not just the LaLiga champions, however, who missed out on his signature, with Al Hilal having planned to lure him to the Saudi Pro League in a deal that would have reportedly been worth around €400 million (R8.1 billion) a year.
Messi is still expected to earn a significant salary in north America, with Goal reporting that the Argentine will put pen to paper on a contract at Inter Miami that will see him earn between €116 million (R2.3 billion) and €139 million (R2.8 billion) over two and a half years.
It is believed that MLS sponsors Apple and adidas will contribute towards making the deal, which will be made up of a base salary and bonuses, possible.
The ex-Barcelona No. 10 will become one of Inter Miami's designated players, a rule that was introduced in the MLS in 2007 to help bring Beckham to the division in what was considered the turning point in the league's recent history.
