Popular football analyst and former Kaizer Chiefs crowd favourite Junior Khanye has commented on how the Soweto giants could have assisted Steve Komphela during his tenure as the club’s head coach.

With Chiefs’ interim coach Cavin Johnson appearing to be unlikely to get the role of head coach at the end of the 2023/24 campaign due to disappointing results, the club is expected to appoint a new coach for next season.

Khanye, who is a big fan of Johnson’s coaching, believes that things could have worked for Komphela at Chiefs had he been surrounded by experienced coaches in the kind of same setup he was in at defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns.

“I have always believed that when Steve Komphela was the coach at Kaizer Chiefs, he needed somebody in the same high level as him next to him on the bench. Like the setup he was in at Sundowns where he worked alongside Rulani Mokwena and Manqoba Mngqithi, that kind of partnership would have worked for Chiefs,” said Khanye, speaking to the Siya crew.

“Steve coached me in the under-20 national team and one thing I like the most about him is that he plays players according to their strengths and potential. If you are a skilful player, he allows you to express yourself on the field in the way you know how. He would have done better than he did,” he concluded.

With the season approaching the last stages, Komphela is leading Golden Arrows revival, with Abafana Bes’thende having won two and drawn one of the three matches under him.
