An African footballer has passed away suddenly, as confirmed by his country's FA.

As confirmed by the Ethiopian Football Federation, Ethiopian Premier League player Alelegn Azene has tragically passed way, with his cause of death still unknown.
A statement released on social media read: "Alelegn Azene, who was playing in the Ethiopian national team and Bahir Dar city, has passed away suddenly. Alelegn Azene was a player who has been selected for our national team many times and is one of the players who are currently showing their best in our football. The Ethiopian Football Federation expresses its deep sorrow over the shocking and heartbreaking death of Alelegn and wishes his condolences to his family, friends, colleagues and the entire football family."
The 26-year-old was said to be one of the highest-paid players in Ethiopia.
The news comes just days after he got married in what was described as a "well attended ceremony in his home country".
Former CAF media expert Collins Okinyo has reacted to the player's passing on X (formerly Twitter), calling for clubs to address mental health issues.

With it believed the arrangements for his funeral are still to be decided, it has been confirmed that he will be laid to rest on Wednesday.

Azene played for Bahir Daz in Ethiopia, whom he joined from Hawassa Kenema FC in 2021.
